Joint Statement: Safety of Local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community

The statement calls for respect towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in the lead up to the 2023 referendum on the Voice to Parliament, while also asking allies and the broader public to help ensure the safety of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members during this time.

Bendigo & District Aboriginal Cooperative, DJAARA, Bendigo NAIDOC Week Committee, and the Bendigo Reconciliation Committee have released an important statement to press and community regarding safety. The statement calls for respect towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in the lead up to the 2023 referendum on the Voice to Parliament, while also asking allies and the broader public to help ensure the safety of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members during this time.  This statement comes in response to members of the local First Nations community being subject to verbal racist attacks in recent weeks.
