Get Involved

We've compiled a selection of campaign and project ideas to support you to get involved in this year's International Women's Day.

There are countless ways for all of us, including individuals, community organisations, businesses, governments, schools, universities and TAFEs to join the movement for International Women’s Day as we work together to balance the scales.

We’ve put together some ideas below to get you started.

Show up

IWD is growing every year, with countless events, both in person and online, taking place across our region and beyond. Showing up matters. When we support those who are leading activities and events, we help to collectively drive change and strengthen the movement toward gender equality.

Check out what’s happening locally by visiting the Women’s Health Loddon Mallee website’s regional IWD event hub.

Host a community event

Bring people together to celebrate International Women’s Day and spark meaningful conversations. You could:

  • Organise a morning tea or community BBQ
  • Host a music or arts event celebrating women and gender diverse artists
  • Organise a sporting event that includes people of all genders.
  • Plan a panel discussion or story-sharing session with inspiring voices from your community
  • Host a movie screening at your local cinema or other community venue or offer an online screening event.

Think about what type of event would resonate best with your community and create an inclusive space where everyone feels welcome.

Host an online forum or panel discussion event

Host a virtual gathering where your community can connect and learn. Use this opportunity to explore the barriers and enablers to achieve gender equality and inspire participants to take action to balance the scales.

An online format makes participation accessible and inclusive, ensuring your message reaches as many people as possible.

Align your IWD event or activity with the United Nations official 2026 theme

Each year UN Women Australia sets the theme for International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is ‘Balance the Scales’.  For more information about the theme, and the recommended resources, see the information we have compiled as part of our IWD Toolkit, or visit UN Women.

List your activity or event on the regional IWD Calendar + Events Hub

WHLM has a regional calendar and events hub for IWD activities in the Loddon Mallee on our website. Register your activity and check out the what’s on.

Invite people of all genders to get involved

We have more power to balance the scales toward equality when people of all genders are invited to actively participate. It takes entire communities to drive impactful and lasting change. The movement isn’t just about improving the lives of women; it’s about dismantling harmful stereotypes and rigid gender roles for everyone.

Get active on social media

Social media is a powerful tool for raising awareness, building knowledge, and inspiring action. Use it to amplify the message of International Women’s Day by:

  • Starting conversations about gender equality and the 2026 theme, Balance the Scales
  • Promoting local events and encouraging community participation
  • Sharing resources and stories that educate and empower

Share books and resources that challenge gender stereotypes

  • Hold a Story Time event at your local library that features a children’s book that challenges gender stereotypes. See our list of recommended kid’s books for ideas.

Record people reading books aloud – take a video or audio recording and share with your networks and communities via an online platform, such as social media or a website.

  • Encourage your local library to set up an IWD book display.

  • Host a book club event featuring works by women authors.

Have conversations about raising gender equal kids

Encourage family, friends, coworkers and other community members to watch the Raise Them Equal animation series and have conversations about raising our kids free from limiting ideas about gender in ways that support them to thrive and live with unlimited potential.

Watch the animations and access conversation starters here.

Organise a community art project

Coordinate an art project that brings your community together. Some ideas to get you inspired:

  • Chalk stencil art on community footpaths with a local youth or school group (make use of the stencil in our campaign resources)
  • Mural painting led by a local female artist
  • Photo voice project showcasing perspectives of young people
  • Support and promote local female artists and musician through exhibitions or performances

Art is a powerful way to spark conversations and promote action to balance the scales.

Share inspiring stories and celebrate trailblazers

Highlight the achievements of women in your community by sharing their stories. Keep this year’s theme, Balance the Scales, in mind and invite women to share their experiences to inspire others. You could:

  • Organise an event featuring local leaders and entrepreneurs
  • Publish their stories in your local newspaper or community newsletters
  • Share profiles and interviews on social media to amplify their voices

Celebrating these stories not only honours their contributions but also motivates others to take action toward gender equality.

Share the campaign widely

Display posters or banners in your workplace, on your website, social media channels, and community notice boards. Use a mix of platforms, both online and offline, to share the campaign messages and reach as many people as possible.
