Over the past year, WHLM has shaped and influenced statewide priorities through place-based, tailored solutions and advocacy that reflect the lived realities of women, girls and gender diverse people across the Loddon Mallee region.
We’ve made significant strides in addressing the complexity of the burden of chronic disease, strengthening our prevention workforce, and embedding data-driven approaches to inform our work. Our “Digesting the Drivers” workshop series engaged over 80% of CARE Partner organisations, enhancing knowledge and skills across the sector. Community engagement expanded through impactful campaigns including the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and International Women’s Day, reaching thousands through events, regional toolkits, digital campaigns, and other activities across the region. These efforts were underpinned by a steadfast commitment to gender equality.
Our incredible team supported organisations to undertake gender impact assessments, delivered targeted workshops and training to community and workforce, and co-designed youth-led initiatives. Our sexual and reproductive health efforts improved health literacy and access for priority populations, while the introduction of inclusive reproductive leave policies and menopause friendly workplaces workshops promoted wellbeing and equity.
We also deepened our focus on climate and disaster preparedness, launching a gender-focused theory of change and developing disaster context sheets to guide local action. Our newly launched ‘Her Mental Health Matters’ a regional mental health and wellbeing strategy to support women, girls, and gender diverse people to thrive was bolstered through new partnerships and resources, reflecting our commitment to collaborative, community-led solutions.
Throughout this journey, I’ve been reminded of the importance of actively and deeply listening to women and girls as their insights shape our shared vision and priorities.
Leadership, to me, is about building self-worth, resilience, and purpose, not just within ourselves, but across our communities. While social media and comparison culture can erode confidence, we can counter this with acts of kindness and supporting one another. Every moment of empowerment is a step toward reclaiming joy and strengthens our sense of agency.
In a time of international threats to women’s health and autonomy, our work is more urgent than ever. This is a moment to rally. To evaluate and challenge leadership that silences women, girls and gender diverse people. To embrace diversity and inclusion. Every day, we have the opportunity to shape the future through policy, partnership, compassion and courage.
This quote from Brene Brown reminds us that there has never been a more important time than now for us to collectively work together in allyships to ensure better access to health system and priorities for women, girls and gender diverse people. Together, as a united community we are creating a safer, healthier, and more inclusive Loddon Mallee.
